A SENIOR CAREER ADVISER REVIEWS RESUMES. THE FEEDBACK IS BRUTAL!!!

In our quest to gain more knowledge and experience so we can give out the best advice and assistance to our clients, we got to witness a live resume / CV review by a senior career adviser. We were happy and excited before the meeting but it all changed by the time we were done.

“To begin with, whenever I am going through resumes and evaluating it there are a number of things I look for right away and just cross off the list”, said the senior career adviser. We will talk about a few of the mistakes pointed out.

  • When you have experience, put your education at the bottom: For recent graduates without working experience, this is normal and accepted. But for people with some working experience, that is the selling point. Experience is more important in the job market than education.

  • Do not include photos: Unless you are a media personality or the job requires that the hiring manager sees your face before hiring you (like modelling), do not include photos.

  • Stay Relevant: Refrain from adding information that is not relevant for the job. Read the job description very well and make sure you are in line with it.

  • Do not CRAM text: Your resume or cv should be readable. Use the right font size and style ( We recommend “Ariel“).

  • Do not make the resume complicated, always choose a simple format or template: Hiring managers usually look for six pieces of specific information in six seconds due to the huge number of resumes and CVs they need to go through. Do not make this any difficult for them.

  • Use Punctuation: It is always advisable to use bullet points but if you do not, make sure to use punctuation.

  • If you are going to use different colors, make sure to use legible colors: Some colors are not so visible on a white background so always make sure you use colors that are visible enough (if you intend using different colors).

These are just a few of the many mistakes pointed out. By just getting these right, you have a higher chance of securing an interview or moving to the next stage of the hiring process.
